United Way Logo

United Way
Procter & Gamble in Alexandria has historically been a strong supporter of our community by donating to the United Way of Central Louisiana. In recent years, our employees(per capita) remain in the top 3% of local contributors. We consistently have representation on the Board of Directors and remain actively involved in this important mission. This gives us reason to remain proud of the character of our people.

The founders of our company, James N. Gamble and William Cooper Procter were instrumental in organizing and coordinating efforts to help the community in Cincinnati after the Great Flood of 1913. The Community Chest was formed, which later became Cincinnati’s United Way.

"We believe that our own quality of life and that of our families depends on our communities health." Durk I. Jager

Volunteer Support Program
In 1989, The company established a Volunteer Support Program to assist employees and retirees who wish to volunteer their services to community activities. This program was established because we believe in the importance of volunteer activity in the community. The program has two elements. The first element is the Volunteer Placement, helping employees and retirees interested in volunteering to find volunteer jobs with non-profit community organizations. Skills and interests are matched with the community organization so that both the volunteer and the organization benefit.

The second element is the Volunteer Grant Program. This program improves the effectiveness of employee and retiree volunteers by providing financial support for the special projects in which they are directly involved. Participation in the program is completely voluntary and all employees are encouraged to be involved with community activities.

Through the combined efforts of our employees, more than 80% of the employee and retiree population are involved in some form of volunteer work. This represents almost 100% participation in non-profit organizations in the local area. Our employees take great pride in improving the community where we live and work by not only giving their money, but their time as well.

National Partners in Education Link

Partners in Education
In addition to other volunteer efforts, we also have a Partners-in-Education partnership with Northwood High School which was contracted in April 1989. Our goals with the partnership are to provide instructional programs by contributing volunteers that help keep the cost of education down, help the students to become successful, productive members of society, to enhance Partners

Procter & Gamble and Northwood High School entered into a partnership in April, 1989. The ultimate goal of this partnership is to provide all students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to compete in a global economy and at the same time, become responsible citizens. Being concerned about the academic growth of students and the need for students to be able to meet the challenges in the upcoming millennium, P&G has shown its commitment to education by being a willing and dedicated partner.

The programs’ objectives are:

  • To provide instructional programs by contributing volunteers or raw materials that help keep the cost of education down
  • To help students become successful, productive members of society
  • To prepare students with up-to-date skills for the working world through increased contact with the business community
  • To provide in-service training and workshops to enhance faculty development
  • To enhance educational programs and strengthen relationships between the schools and the community

We remain active and visible in the support of our partners and this is reflected in our programs. Emphasis is placed upon contributions of human resources rather than financial and material resources. Good partnerships get people involved with each other. We concentrate on building strong personal relationships and although this may be difficult at first, we gradually develop trust through regular and non-threatening activities together.

Each year, the P&G employees that participate in the partnership use a "work plan" to achieve the objectives. A work plan is a detailed action plan for the team to follow. It ensures we are meeting the goals and objectives that we set forth.

When the community and schools work together, everyone’s future becomes brighter!
